These are a fun way to use the plethora of scrap hardwood around the shop. Some have inlay of stone cabochon--rose quartz, obsidian, abalone, tiger-eye and jasper.
I've been using a friction-polish to finish these, and experimenting with dyes and burning rings with wire. I found that super-glue is the wrong adhesive for attaching cabs to wood -- several came off. Now, I'm using E-6000, which is flexible but strong.
As for glue on the cork/dowel interface, yellow glue seems to be working OK.
FYI: Friction polish = equal parts 2lb cut shellac, alcohol and boiled linseed oil.
