Walnut Rocker

The next sculpted rocker is under construction.  Now that I can work on it full-time, it's going pretty fast. In two weeks all the parts are cut and dry fitted.  After seat has been formed and spindles completed, the slow process of carving and shaping starts.

I use a variety of tools to do the shaping...including and ArborTech grinder, spoke shaves, files, microplane, sanders, crooked knives...and on and on.

The rockers are cold laminated from strips of walnut and one accent strip of maple.

Two days of uninterrupted work, and I have it all glued and most of the shaping done...just have to finish the rocker to leg transitions before a final sanding and prep for finish.

Someday I'm going to stop the finishing at just course sanding or file work because it feels so good.   Although when this walnut is rubbed out to 300 grit and given a satin finish, it will LOOK spectacular. and still sit mighty fine ;o)

Aug 26.. done.   This is a stunner with the maple accent.
