Bookcase in Cherry

This one is 95 x 39 x 12 with a bin drawer on bottom, crown mold at ceiling and adjustable shelves. Carcass will be 3/4 cherry ply with a solid cherry frame.

The customer wisely chose to finish without stain. I think it is a shame to stain such a beautiful wood.

Since this cabinet is going to hold books on 3/4 in. shelves spanning 37.5 in., I'm going to have to stiffen them to prevent sagging over time. The most efficient solution I think will be to attach a 3/4 x 1.5 in. strip of cherry on the front edge of each shelf. That should keep the adjustable shelves flat for centuries.

The case and fixed shelves are glued, ready to screw on the frame and make the drawer and crown mold. But first, the dogs want to go run in the snow. ;o)

Frame screwed and pegged, drawer built, crown mold made.

Here's an end view of the crown. I found a great sanding aid for the cove--laid sandpaper over some foam pipe insulation wrapped around a section of 2 inch PVC. It fit perfectly and did a fast job.
